Fraport Brasil opens exhibition on the flood that hit the airport
"Beyond the Waters: Memories and Reconstruction" recalls the impacts caused by the disaster, told from the point of view of Fraport Brasil employees
In May 2024, Porto Alegre Airport faced one of the most challenging moments in its history. The airport, which connects the state of Rio Grande do Sul to the rest of the world, was inundated by the floods that had been spreading across the state since April. The terminal closed on May 3, was flooded for 23 days and remained without flights for almost five months. A year later, the terminal is operating without any restrictions and is commemorating the episode with the exhibition "Beyond the Waters: Memories & Reconstruction".
The exhibition will be inaugurated this Friday (May 2), starting at 9am, and is open to the public and free of charge. The images are on Level 2 of the Terminal, to the right of the domestic check-in.
In the exhibition, the impact and consequences of the flood are told from the point of view of the employees of Fraport Brasil, which manages the airport.
They are people who saw each stage up close, from the apprehension of watching the water approach to the decision to suspend operations. The images show the veritable "camp" organized in the terminal itself, where many employees remained to continue protecting the airport.
Recounting what happened in the terminal during and after the disaster, the images reflect moments of uncertainty and apprehension, but also of unity, solidarity and strength.
"More than a visual memory, this exhibition is an invitation to reflect on resilience, belonging, teamwork, organization and the ability to deliver," says Leonardo Carnielle, vice-president of Fraport Brasil.
This exhibition is also a tribute from Fraport Brasil to each of its employees at Porto Alegre and Fortaleza airports, who helped to emerge from this crisis and put the terminal back into operation. The concessionaire would also like to thank, once again, the support of partner companies, public bodies, the federal and state governments, rice farmers and, above all, the resilience of the people of Rio Grande do Sul and everyone who has been part of this story in any way.
The exhibition will remain at the airport until the end of the year.
