Fraport Brasil completes first stage of infrastructure works at Porto Alegre Airport
Phase 1B of the works is completed on schedule
On the morning of November 19, Fraport Brasil - Porto Alegre, which has been operating in Rio Grande do Sul since September 2017, will officially hand over the first phase of the airport infrastructure works provided for in the concession contract signed with the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).
In the presence of government authorities, the CEO of Fraport AG, Stefan Schulte, a delegation from Fraport AG and Fraport Lima, the CEO of Fraport Brasil, Andreea Pal, and other members of the Board of Directors, partners and the press, Fraport reinforced its commitment to presenting a more modern airport, with international quality standards in safety, services and operations for its passengers and users. The works are 74% complete - there is still the stage of extending the runway by 920m.
Deliveries
In addition to the first interventions carried out after taking over operations on January 2, 2018, which included the operational systems, lighting, restrooms, Wi-Fi and signage, Fraport Brasil made the first of a series of deliveries in the same year. In December 2018, the new security control area and international departure lounge were opened. This was the first major change, which altered the flow of international passengers at the airport - after checking in on Level 2, passengers go up to Level 3 to access the new boarding area.
In April 2019, it delivered one of the most significant stages of Phase 1B: a new check-in area, new domestic boarding, new domestic departure lounges and a new domestic arrivals area. On April 2, the airlines operating in the Terminal began their check-in operations for domestic and international flights in the expansion area on Level 2. Passengers also gained two new entrance doors to the Terminal, located next to the three existing ones, which give direct access to the airlines' service. With 41 check-in desks, the space offers more comfort and dynamism to the process.
On the same day, passengers on domestic flights also began boarding and disembarking in a new space, in the expansion area.
With the new departure lounge located on the pier (with six new gates), the nomenclature was also changed to: 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108 and 109, respectively. For the convenience and comfort of passengers, all the toilets located in the new departure and arrival hall, pier and check-in have baby changing facilities, family toilets and PcD (People with Disabilities) toilets.
Also part of this delivery was the opening of the new domestic arrivals area. Previously in a room adjacent to the international arrivals hall, the service was moved to the Terminal's expansion structure and gained three new, modern carousels for baggage reclaim.
In June, the new garage building was delivered, located next to the Passenger Terminal, with five floors and 1,050 parking spaces. This new facility also led to a change in the name of the spaces, which are now identified as: Parking Lot 1 (former Pocket A), Parking Lot 2 (former garage building) and Parking Lot 3 (new garage building). Parking Lot 4 was delivered in September.
Still in the area of expanding the Terminal, on August 1st Porto Alegre Airport passengers began to enjoy new domestic departure lounges, as well as a mezzanine (floor 3), accessible after the domestic departure inspection channels.
In September, the old check-in area, on Level 2 of the Terminal, began serving only international flights. As a result, the check-in area inaugurated in April of this year was dedicated to domestic flights, ensuring more comfort and agility for everyone. With these changes, the airline Azul transferred all its operations to the old Terminal 1. This way, all operations were concentrated in a single Terminal and Terminal 2, now Fraport Brasil's Administrative Building, also houses the Control Tower and the Company's offices.
Technology
New technologies were used to modernize the operations and administration of the various elements that make up the airport site. The BHS (Baggage Handling System), which collects, identifies and distributes baggage, and the HBS (Hold Baggage Screening), which automatically scans baggage, were installed, providing a safer and more efficient process.
Another improvement was the installation of the BCBP (Bar Coded Boarding Pass) for domestic and international shipments. The equipment is located before the inspection channel and automatically reads the boarding pass. In all, 12 pieces of equipment control passenger access to domestic and international departure lounges: eight for domestic boarding and four for international boarding - three of these are for direct boarding and one for passengers on a domestic-international connection.
In terms of infrastructure, Fraport delivered one of the first concrete taxiways in the country. A reuse water system was also implemented, in which rainwater is used for toilets. This measure has generated savings of approximately 30%, equivalent to 50,000 liters of water per month.
In 2018, improvements were also made to the wi-fi and security camera solution systems.
Contract with BNDES
In December 2018, the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) approved financing of R$1.25 billion for Fraport Brasil - Porto Alegre. The bank's support, in the form of Project Finance, corresponds to more than 60% of the total investment of approximately R$1.8 billion, which includes the contracting of the construction consortium, the purchase of equipment, the development and management of the project. The financing has a term of 20 years.
Works on the airside
Alongside the work to expand and renovate the Passenger Terminal, work was also carried out on the Airside (where aircraft operate). In December 2018, the north island of the new paved Taxiway P was delivered, which facilitates the flow of aircraft in Yards 1 and 2, especially for large aircraft operating international flights. The RESAS (safety areas) on headland 29 and 11 of the current runway were also inaugurated, further improving operational safety conditions at the airport.
Work was also completed on the new power substation 2, which serves the Passenger Terminal and the new Porto Alegre Airport Waste Center.
Passengers and all business partners now benefit directly from a larger, more comfortable terminal and an airside infrastructure that meets international safety requirements.
Consortium
In January 2018, Fraport Brasil - Porto Alegre signed a contract with the HTBM Consortium, made up of HTB, TEDESCO and Barbosa Mello, to carry out the expansion work at Porto Alegre Airport. Started in March of the same year, the works consisted mainly of expanding Terminal 1, extending the runway, adapting the taxiways and improving the airport's drainage system.
Responsible for all stages of the work, from design to final delivery, the
Consortium coordinated a workforce of approximately 2,000 employees who
worked around the clock on the job. Motivated and committed to the proposal, they were
partners of Fraport Brasil in this great project, with the aim of contributing
actively to the complete modernization of Porto Alegre airport.
What lies ahead
The expansion of the runway from 2,280 meters to 3,200 meters will allow the airport to receive larger aircraft operating long-haul flights. This will make it possible to increase the number of international flights from Porto Alegre, as well as increasing the opportunities for transporting cargo from Rio Grande do Sul by air. Today, most of the products produced in Rio Grande do Sul go overland to São Paulo and then on to their destination by plane.
